Gus Hansen had a marvelous year on the World Poker Tour where he was the only one to achieve final game in three of the competitions. Gus Hansen has been seen on High Stakes Poker on GSN where he bought into the game for $400, 000. You might recall one of the biggest pots in big stakes poker recorded history up against Daniel Negreanu. He raked in a big pot with quads against Daniel’s full house. Hansen has made many tv poker appearances and is deemed to be one of the strongest bettors around the world. While betting on web poker, another side of Hansen has emerged. Gus regularly competes in the 200/400 NL max buy-in of $40, 000. Gus more often than not buys in for the minimum of $16, 000 and plays very poorly. He sits there waiting for a good hand and then pushes all-in. I believe Hansen is an excellent poker player but not even close to the familiar players at 200/400no limit. Unless he is bankrupt, he has little or no reason to sit at the table with the min buy in.
Buying in for the min takes almost all of the skill out of big stack poker. Gus is presumed to be one of the best players anywhere in the world but he cannot buy-in for the total amount. I think television can skew our view of the real world sometimes. The greatest poker players in the world might be players you have will not have heard of before. Gus can be seen betting on web poker on Full Tilt. He usually plays in high stakes omaha high and texas holdem. Gus has proven himself as a competition player. Can he back up his abilities in cash rounds?
