Omaha Hi Lo: Fundamental Summary

Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha 8 or better) is often times seen as one of the most difficult but well-loved poker variations. It’s a variation that, even more than normal Omaha poker, aims for action from every level of players. This is the chief reason why a once irrelevant variation, has increased in acceptance so rapidly.
Omaha 8 or better starts like a regular game of Omaha. Four cards are given out to each player. A round of wagering ensues in which players can bet, check, or drop out. 3 cards are handed out, this is referred to as the flop. A further round of betting happens. Once all the gamblers have in turn called or dropped out, a further card is revealed on the turn. an additional round of betting ensues and then the river card is flipped. The players will have to put together the strongest high and low 5 card hands based on the board and hole cards.
This is where many players get baffled. Unlike Texas Hold ‘Em, where the board can be every player’s hand, in Omaha hi-low the player must use exactly 3 cards on the board, and precisely two hole cards. Not a single card more, not a single card less. Contrary to normal Omaha, there are 2 ways a pot can be won: the "higher hand" or the "low hand."
A high hand is exactly what it sounds like. It’s the strongest possible hand out of everyone’s, whether that is a straight, flush, full house, etc. It’s the same concept in just about every poker game.
A lower hand is more difficult, but really opens up the action. When figuring out a low hand, straights and flushes do not count. A low hand is the weakest hand that can be made, with the lowest being made up of A-2-3-4-5. Since straights and flushes don’t count, A-2-3-4-5 is the worst possible hand. The low hand is any 5 card hand (unpaired) with an eight and lower. The low hand takes half of the pot, as does the higher hand. When there is no low hand available, the high hand wins the entire pot.
It may seem complicated at the start, after a few hands you will be agile enough to pick up on the basic subtleties of play with ease. Seeing as you have individuals betting for the low and wagering for the high, and since so many cards are in play, Omaha High-Low offers an overwhelming range of betting possibilities and because you have several players trying for the high hand, along with a few battling for the low. If you like a game with all kinds of outs and actions, it is not a waste of your time to participate in Omaha 8 or better.
