Howard Lederer grew up in a family of 5 in which he enjoyed playing different card games when he was young. He discovered himself getting very competitive in these card games as he was playing his father. After graduating from Sr. High school, Howard decided to place college on hold for a little while and headed to New York City to play some formidable chess. While participating in chess, he was brought in to a poker game going on in the back of the room. Howard’s first two years were difficult as he would play many hours and do not win most times. He made some extra money by becoming an assistant for the poker players. He theorized he could better his game by adjusting his life outside of poker. He brought about an effort to get more rest and focus more on the game.
The definite advancement in his game began when he began wagering at the Mayfair Club in New York. The Mayfair was a bridge and backgammon association where the greatest players would frequently play against one another. Howard was able to access a few of the best players in chess. With their assistance, Howard would tweak his logical thinking techniques. Howard applied these strategic concepts to the game of NL texas hold’em.
Howard also helped his sibling Annie Duke learn poker. Annie was a great student of the game as she constantly asked questions about the right way to make the proper decision. Howard Lederer told Annie to head out to Las Vegas and compete in the WSOP tournaments. Annie is one of the strongest female players the poker world today. Howard Lederer relocated to Vegas in Nineteen Ninety Three and played cash games for the next decade. When the World Poker Tournament gained popularity, he decided to compete in more tournaments.
